This is, by a wide margin, the most active area of veterinary interest — and for good reason. Osteoarthritis is extremely common in aging dogs, and orthopedic surgery (cruciate ligament repair especially) is one of the most frequently performed veterinary surgeries. Veterinary sports medicine and rehabilitation specialists already use regenerative approaches like PRP and, in some practices, stem cell therapy for exactly these situations, which is part of why peptide research in this space doesn't feel like a stretch to veterinary professionals the way it might in less-established categories. That said, established regenerative therapy and specific peptide protocols are not the same thing — most peptide-specific claims in this category are still extrapolated from human orthopedic and sports-recovery research rather than validated in controlled veterinary trials.

Interest in peptide-based approaches to wound healing draws on this same underlying biology. As with joint research, the caveat is important: most of what's discussed for pets specifically is drawn from human and laboratory-animal wound-healing research, not from studies conducted in dogs or cats as the target species.

Metabolic peptide research in humans has moved quickly in recent years, and it's natural for that momentum to raise the question of veterinary relevance. As of today, though, veterinary-specific metabolic peptide research remains a much smaller and earlier body of work than the human research it's often compared to, and existing veterinary weight-management guidance (nutrition, exercise, and in some cases FDA-approved veterinary weight-management medications) remains the established, evidence-backed approach.

Senior cognitive decline research

Canine cognitive dysfunction (sometimes described as similar in presentation to dementia) is a recognized, diagnosable condition in veterinary medicine, with established management approaches including environmental enrichment, specific diets, and in some cases medication prescribed by a veterinarian. General aging-brain and neuroprotective research — including some peptide research — is an active human and laboratory-animal field, and it's understandable that owners of senior pets take an interest. Veterinary-specific research on peptide approaches to cognitive aging in dogs and cats is still an emerging area, with far less established evidence than the existing, veterinarian-directed management approaches already available.

Dermatological research

Skin conditions are among the most common reasons dogs and cats see a veterinarian, and veterinary dermatology is a well-established specialty with a wide range of proven treatments already available. Peptide-related interest in this category tends to be smaller and more niche than the other four, usually discussed alongside — rather than instead of — existing dermatological care. As with the other categories, any specific peptide claims for skin or coat health in pets should be treated as unproven until a veterinarian's evaluation and, ideally, veterinary-specific research says otherwise.
